Apple: primary category		Drives browse placement and the category charts. Games is itself a primary category.
Apple: secondary category		Extra browse surface. It does not get its own chart rank.
Apple: game subcategories		Only when Games is the primary or secondary category.
Play: category		Apps and games each choose from their own list. You pick it in Play Console under Store settings.
Play: tags		Finer-grained than categories. Choose them from the list Play offers for your category.
Changing it		Apple applies a category change with the next app version. Play applies it after a store listing update.

How many categories can an iOS app have?

One primary category is required and one secondary category is optional. If your primary or secondary category is Games, you can also choose up to two game subcategories for each.

What are the App Store category IDs?

Apple identifies each category by a numeric genre ID, for example 6000 for Business, 6007 for Productivity, and 6014 for Games. The IDs are listed in the table above and in the JSON and CSV downloads.

How many categories can a Google Play app have?

One category, plus up to five tags. Apps and games use separate category lists, so you choose Application or Game first and then a category inside it.

Does my App Store category affect ranking?

It decides which category chart you can appear in and where you show up when people browse. A smaller category is easier to chart in, but pick the category your users would actually look in. Search ranking is driven mostly by your name, subtitle, and keyword field.

Are Utilities and Tools the same thing?

They are the closest pair across the two stores, but not an exact match. Apple Utilities is a catch-all bucket, while Google Play Tools is too and also overlaps with Personalization and Libraries & Demo. The counterpart column shows the nearest fit for each category.
