Why Catalan matters

Catalan has around 10M speakers across Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearics and Andorra (where it is the sole official language), and it is a full language, not a Spanish dialect. iOS gives it its own 'ca' locale. Speakers reward apps that localize specifically for them, and its unmistakable signature is the ela geminada 'l·l' (a middle dot between two L's, as in 'intel·ligent'), which no Spanish or generic Latin workflow produces by default.

Localization tips for Catalan

1. 1 Set the ela geminada with a real interpunct: 'l·l' (U+00B7 between two L's), as in 'intel·ligent' and 'col·lecció', not 'll' and not 'l.l'.
2. 2 Catalan uses both grave (à, è, ò) and acute (é, í, ó, ú) accents. È and é are genuinely different vowels, unlike Spanish which only marks stress with the acute.
3. 3 The ç cedilla is required, as in 'força' and 'llançar'.
4. 4 Budget about 20% more horizontal space than English.
5. 5 Default to informal 'tu' in consumer apps; note the Valencian variant differs slightly if you target the Valencia region.
6. 6 Add Catalan as its own 'ca' locale alongside Spanish. Folding it into the Spanish listing forfeits the conversion lift in Catalonia.
